Apparently the fine institution I work for has decided that it needs to start controlling which internet sites I access. One would hope that some sense of academic freedom and liberty would pervade in a research institution with professors and students. It just reminds me how important it is to make sure that all of my future research is done at universities. I hate to sound shrill or cheesy, but inspiration for what I do can come from anywhere! Even websites that they think I shouldn't be looking at! I would understand if it was porn or something, but they are trying to ban all websites that they consider "entertainment!" What's next, I can't read a non-scientific magazine while taking a shit in the company bathroom? Hopefully I can keep accessing blogs, including my own...

So here I was, all super excited for today's post. You see, it was suppossed to announce that I had finished recording my first real song ("real" meaning not thrown together in half an hour while drunk lying in bed), complete with links to the .mp3 and pictures of the recording process. Problem is, my laptop totally crapped out on me Saturday evening (and I thought the bluescreen of death was just a nasty rumour started by Apple!) It appears to be hard drive related, and thank the Good Lord in Heaven I managed to get it started up long enough to save everything, including all of my really important work stuff and my music recordings so far. The bad news is that I am without a way to record since my soundcard/mic preamp is firewire dependent. So the world will just have to wait for my music to come and start changing lives. Sorry, world!

We recently gave in and ordered cable service, with the rationale that parenthood will lead to us sitting on the couch a lot more. I have to say, I was pretty disappointed for the first couple of weeks. The reception is great, but most shows seem to concern celebrities, plastic surgery, or some combination of the two. That is until I found repeats of Star Trek - The Next Generation on some channel called Spike (I think). Yeah, yeah, call me a total dork, but I swear I never liked the original Star Trek, nor any of the countless spinoffs since Next Generation (although I was tempted by the one with the Quantum Leap dude). I have also never attended any Star Trek conferences or attempted to learn Klingon or any loser shit like that. But Next Generation is the shining beacon of the Star Trek franchise, with unforgettable characters like Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Commander "Number One" Riker, and Data, the lovable android that is always trying to be more human. It manages to be totally nerdy and totally awesome at the same time. The part that really blows my mind is that as a kid, I used to sit around and watch this with my whole family. It has been pretty clear from birth that I rate pretty high on the nerd scale, but the rest of my family is pretty normal. But that didn't stop us from religiously tuning into the "continuing mission" of the USS Enterprise every week. If that doesn't convince you to check it out, I don't know what will. Maybe this picture?

My normal earthly morning routine was destroyed after I looked at thenew pictures of Saturnin National Geographic. There I was, enjoying my peaceful 5 minutes of toilet reading before rushing off to work, when suddenly these otherworldly pictures made me THINK! Why are we here? What does it all mean? Why do I even get out of bed when I am, cosmically speaking, a tiny, tiny speck of dust? Questions not easily answered by my subsequent walk through the streets of New York City, where pretending to be the center of the universe is a way of life. Oh well.

Thanksgiving is kind of our special tradition and we have had people over every year since we moved to New York, which made this the 5th straight. It is by far my favorite holiday, since it involves nothing but cooking, eating, drinking, and lying around watching TV. One of my favorite parts of the Thanksgiving tradition for us is the viewing of the Styx DVD, and seeing who loses their stomach after witnessing all of the jumpsuits, mullets, falsettos, and homoerotic energy. I was a little worried about the chemistry this year since we had an ex-boyfriend/girlfriend couple present. However, everyone was on their best behavior, which is something I have noticed we bring out in people. Giving out the mom-and-dad vibe makes me feel a little old sometimes, but I guess it is not such a bad thing amongst my group of twenty-something year old friends. Plus I guess it makes sense now that we are actually going to be parents soon!
