Site Down During Comcast ... Posted by McLindy
(2008/12/10)
The site was unavailable for the last few days because Comcast did a major network upgrade. This happened a few years ago and it'll happen again I'm sure in a few more years. The good new is that I finally have a faster upload speed and that should result in faster downloads for users and those who subscribe to the podcast. The only bad news is that the site was down because they didn't tell me and the only way to figure it out is when things don't work. I've been slammed at work this week so I didn't notice until an hour or so ago. It's a five minute fix but then it takes up to 24 hours for the DNS records to update and let you find the site again.
I bought an Anteres AVP-1 vocal processor. Probably its main claim to fame is the "Cher" effect of that do you believe in life after love song, also featured in that other irritating yet catchy song, Blue. The effect is the result of real-time pitch correction gone horribly wrong on purpose.
The AVP-1 is supposed to handle live pitch correction. It works, but when it does I swear I can hear that wonky Cher sound. Sometimes it's just better to be off pitch. Fortunately it also has some other sweet features, like a decent compressor, gate, de-esser, two EQs, a nice vocal doubler, and some interesting (though I'm not sold yet) microphone modeling settings. I haven't used it yet in any recordings but I've been screwing around with it for two weeks now. I'll definitely be posting some podcasts during the winter break.

Spring Cleanin' I cleaned up the work area in significant ways, starting with a 22" widescreen LCD monitor. This allowed me to condense my setup and make things way more efficient. This setup is way more recording ...

Gadgetry & Whatnot I picked up a Behringer BCR2000 MIDI controller off of craigslist a couple of days ago. Last night I had a little time to get it working with Sonar. Mmmm. Malto Bene.

New Meekrophone No, it's not a typo. I just picked up a Joe Meek microphone, an M47 I believe (it's downstairs and I'm too lazy to go have another look at it). I have been using Yates' M47 for a while so it's cool ...
